The Fourth IRA Volunteer to join the 1981 hunger-strike for political status was Joe McDonnell, a thirty-year-old married man with two children, from the Lenadoon housing estate in West Belfast. On 8th July 1981 Volunteer Joe McDonnell died after sixty one days of agonising hunger strike, rather than be criminalised.
