Attempts to cut the minimum wage must be resisted - Ruane

Sinn Féin Councillor Therese Ruane has warned that any cut to the minimum wage would create severe hardship for low paid workers and must be opposed. She said such a move would force more families to rely on supplementary welfare assistance from the state and would have knock on impacts on across the local economy. Cllr. Ruane will be seeking the support of her colleagues on Castlebar Town Council at next Thursday's meeting for a motion, she has tabled insisting that there be no reduction in the minimum wage. Organic Community Garden in Castlebar

Organic Community Garden in Castlebar The first Organic Community Garden in Castlebar is up and running. Volunteers working on this project are seeking donations of gardening tools, plants and equipment such as shed, water storage, benches, etc from individuals or businesses in the Castlebar area. A number of businesses have been contaced and have already indicated their approval for donations to this worthwhile project. Read full article

SOLIDARITY WITH GAZA FREEDOM FLOTILLA IN CASTLEBAR

More than 100 people attended a Solidarity Vigil with Palestine and the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in Castlebar on Tuesday last organised by Mayo Sinn Féin. The families of Derek and Jenny Graham from Ballina, Co. Mayo received a warm welcome and messages of support for the safe passage to Gaza of the MV Rachel Corrie to deliver its vital humanitarian supplies. Read full article

Unnimous show of Solidarity with Palestinian people

Sinn Féin Councillor, Thérèse Ruane, has welcomed the unanimous backing by members of Castlebar Town Council for her motion calling on the Town Manager not to sign any new or renew any existing contracts with French multinational Veolia, which has the multi-million contract for the Sewerage Treatment plant in Castlebar. Veolia operate Israeli rail, bus and waste services in the illegally occupied West Bank, making them complicit in Israel's contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention.The motion also proposes that the Town Council write a letter to Veolia Ireland expressing our opposition to their involvement in building a light railway system linking Israel to illegal settlements in occupied East Jerusalem. UNIONS MUST MAKE OIL AND GAS RESOURCES A DEAL BREAKER

Sinn Fein County Councilor Gerry Murray has called on the trade union movement to put the renegotiation of all deals and licenses for our natural resources on the table of social partnership. Cllr Murray said that the trade union movement had a moral, social and economic responsibility not just merely to its own members but also to the people of Ireland to claim back the enormous wealth that had been give away by successive governments. Ruane urges Parents to avail of Free Dental Care

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane urges parents to avail of a scheme which provides free dental care for 14 to 16 year olds. Sinn Féin Councillor, Thérèse Ruane, is calling for the immediate intervention of the Minister for Social and Family Affairs to address the plight of families who are unemployed but cannot avail of social welfare entitlements. Minister threat to cut Special needs assistants is heartless

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane is insisting that threatened cuts to special needs assistants in St. Anthony's Special School be reversed. Bike to Work Scheme must be implemented

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane is calling for renewed efforts and commitment to implement the 'Bike to Work' Scheme. The roll out of this scheme introduced on 1 January 2009 has been a shambles to date. She is calling on government departments and all employers to register for this scheme and play their part in promoting cycling as a viable means of transport. Read full article
