Wasted Money Would Fund New Road for ErrisPublished: 6 July, 2006
Sinn Féin's General Election candidate in Mayo Cllr. Gerry Murray has called for a new road to be constructed between Castlebar and Bellmullet in order to open up the Erris region. In a statement Cllr. Murray said that providing proper access to Erris was vital so the region could attract investment and jobs. "The Erris region has huge tourism and economic potential, but the lack of a proper road infrastructure is hindering economic growth and investment. Before embarking on a costly upgrade of the current route, estimates should be obtained of what it would cost to build a complete new road from Castlebar to Bellmullet.
"The money the Fianna Fáil/Progressive Democrats government has wasted on the useless PPARS and FISP computer systems and on electronic voting machines that don't work, would pay for a new road into the Erris region. Since 1999 over €195 million has been spent on these computer systems that do not work. Yet €200 million would build a new road into the Erris region", stated Cllr. Murray.
