Sinn Féin's McGuinness to honour Mayo manPublished: 15 September, 2006
Ballycroy native, Seán 'Jack' McNeela is to be honoured at a commemoration on Sunday 24th September by Sinn Féin MP Martin McGuinness. IRA Volunteer, McNeela died in brutal circumstances in Arbour Hill Military Detention Barracks, Dublin in 1940 after 55 days on hunger strike. Also being honoured on the day is McNeela's comrade, Tony Darcy from Headford, Co. Galway who also died in 1940 after 52 days on hunger strike. Sinn Féin's Erris representative Rose Conway-Walsh explained, "The commemoration not only remembers the historic 1981 Hunger Strike in Long Kesh 25 years ago, but will centre on the sacrifice made in 1940 by Mayo man Oglaigh Jack McNeela and Oglaigh Tony Darcy from Headford." The commemoration marches from Quelly's Cross, Caherlistrane, Co. Galway at 2.00pm to the Republican Plot in Donaghpatrick Cemetery where Martin McGuinness MP will deliver the main address. |
