A chara,
Responding to Frank Mc Donald's article in The Irish Times on Monday 31 January 2011 entitled 'Kenny see old railway as a tourist trail'. I was shocked and disappointment to read in the article that Enda Kenny would lend support to this walking and cycling Greenway on the railway line from Claremorris to Sligo. This railway track is vital if we are to ensure that the Western Rail Corridor will be completed in the future. I am calling on Enda Kenny to affirm his commitment to the completion of the Western Rail Corridor. As chairperson of Smart Travel Castlebar, an organisation promoting sustainable travel in Mayo, I and my organisation actively promote cycling and walking. Mayo is a walking and cycling paradise and The Great Western Greenway from Newport to Mulranny has been a phenomenal success. However, any future greenways should be developed in tandem with rail networks and vital sustainable transport infrastructure. There must no question of developing them on existing rail tracks, used or unused, along the Western Rail Corridor. Brendan Quinn, the greenway promoter, in this article made some claims that are disengenuous. He said that he didn't see that the Ennis-Athenry line 'has set the world alight'. This phase of the Western Rail Corridor has been so successful that Iarnród Eireann is opening two new stations at Oranmore and Crusheen to be completed in Summer 2012 as well as putting on extra commuter trains from Galway. It is essential to the West of Ireland that the Western Rail Corridor is kept on track and that the commitment made in the Government's Transport 21 Investment Programme be delivered on. What Mr. Quinn described as a 'rather forlorn idea' that the railway line would reopen from Claremorris to Sligo, we in the West of Ireland promoting sustainable travel see it very differently and will fight tooth and nail to ensure that the remaining phases of the Western Rail Corridor are completed without delay. I hope that Enda Kenny will affirm his commitment to this essential rail infrastructure for the people of Mayo and the West of Ireland.
Is mise,
Therese Ruane Read full article
