FUNDING FOR LIS ROADS MUST BE REINSTATED - CONWAY-WALSHPublished: 27 January, 2012
Speaking at the Belmullet Local Area Meeting last week Cllr. Conway-Walsh said: "Minister Varadkar needs to be told to reverse his decision to abolish the only means of getting these roads repaired. His own Junior Minister, Michael Ring and the other Mayo Government TD's know all these roads and the people living along them. They are not the Goldman Sachs or the Rothschild empires to whom the Fine Gael/Labour Government have gifted €1.25 billion this week - They are the ordinary rural families who need to be able to get in and out of their homes and access their lands safely." "The Ard Mor Road, Binghamstown (pictured above) is one such road which is almost impassable. As this is not a Council Road the reinstatement of the LIS Scheme is necessary to provide the funding so that those using the road will not be completely cut off from their homes and lands. Can Minister Varadkar explain how these people and the other hundreds of families in the Belmullet Electoral Area and the wider Mayo area access their homes and lands. Can he further explain to the HSE personnel and the An Post workers who provide essential services how they can reach their clients and customers safely. It is disgraceful that this Government think they can get away with treating rural citizens in this way. It was bad enough the last Government cut the LIS Scheme from over €80,000 per councilor to €18,000 per councilor in the last couple of years. I cannot do my job as a councilor with both hands tied behind my back." |
