Caisleán an Bharraigh
Castlebar native and human rights activist Thérèse Ruane is deeply committed to promoting equality and social justice. Thérèse is a member of Castlebar Town Council.
Thérèse is a founding member of Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA), an award-winning human rights organisation based in Castlebar. Over the years she has volunteered and worked with a number of community organisations, advocating and campaigning on behalf of women's groups, lone parents, unemployed people and youth groups, as well as migrants here in Mayo.
Thérèse trained as a teacher and taught at second and third level, as well as in adult education. She has a keen interest in sport and represented Connaught in athletics and tennis. She has coached Gaelic football and basketball.
Thérèse has a keen interest in environmental issues and is a member of Castlebar Tidy Town's Commitee. She is the chairperson of Iompar Caisleán an Bharraigh, a newly established group to promote sustainable travel in Castlebar and Mayo. She is also pioneering the setting up of allotments and an organic community garden in Castlebar.
Thérèse is fluent in both Spanish and Irish and has an MA in Intercultural Studies from Dublin City University. Thérèse, a founding member of a Ciorcal Comhrá in Castlebar, actively promotes the Irish language - ag déanamh gach iarracht chun an Ghaeilge chun cinn.
