Councillor Gerry Murray was first elected to Mayo County Council in 1999. In the 2004 local elections, he topped the poll in the Swinford electoral district with an impressive 1,782 first preference votes, taking 23% of the vote.

In the 2007 general election Councillor Murray was the party's general election candidate in Mayo. He increased Sinn Féin's vote ensuring that Sinn Féin remains the third largest party in Mayo. Councillor Murray is a native of Charlestown and is married with two children. He is a member of numerous community and campaigning groups in the north-west region and has worked closely with the Rossport Five in their campaign for justice.
